This month’s tip will give you a skill that is necessary to lower your handicap. To lower your handicap you need sustained consistency. Controlling the rotation of your arms and body is the key to achieving consistency. Here is a full-swing drill that will help you sustain consistency.
1. Take your normal setup.
2. Pick up your left toe and point it at the target.
3. Take five normal practice swings, then hit three balls in that position.
4. Take your normal setup.
5. Pick up your right toe and point it opposite the target.
6. Take five normal practice swings, then hit three balls in that position.
The rotation of your arms is a little more complicated, but with patience you can overcome the biggest problem facing most golfers today. This drill will instill the correct feeling of arm rotation throughout the entire golf swing.
1. Position your right hand straight out in front of your chest. Your palm should face the target with your right thumb pointing towards the sky.
2. Simulate the backswing with the movement of your right hand and arm only. Halfway back your right thumb should point up and behind your body.
3. Slowly swing your arm towards the ball. At the ball your right thumb should point just in front of the ball.
4. Continue swinging your arm until your right thumb points behind your body. This drill requires the golf to practice without a club before using a club. You will not be able to do this drill without practicing it.
